Holidays by the Polish seaside in 2022, or why Niechorze guarantees you a perfect holiday!

The times in which we all have recently come to function are not the easiest, or even more predictable. The constantly changing epidemiological situation in connection with COVID-19, the conditions of foreign trips and stays in foreign countries, encourage to change holiday destinations and choose Poland and the Baltic Sea as a safe and reliable alternative to the destinations of Southern Europe, Africa or Asia. This situation applies primarily to holiday trips with children, when a possible quarantine abroad may turn out to be a very serious additional cost.

Hence the growing popularity of holidays on the Baltic Sea, where we can go with our own transport, rent an individual apartment with a kitchenette or a detached house. Therefore, in 2021, we propose to “look around” the map of Poland a little more carefully and consider going to lesser-known Baltic towns, which have a rich and versatile accommodation and service base, but at the same time have still retained their small-town, rural charm.

Many such not yet fully discovered places can be found in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. One of them is Niechorze – a picturesque seaside oasis of peace, a shelter for wild nature and unique landscape complexes and bird sanctuaries, unique in Poland and Europe. What makes Niechorze so special? Below, especially for those thirsty for successful holiday travels – a subjective guide to the biggest distinguishing features and “magnets” attracting more and more tourists, including families with children, for holidays to Niechorze.

Location of Niechorze and nature

From the very beginning, the uniqueness of Niechorze can be seen in its location. The western part of the village is located on a majestic over 20-meter cliff, from where there is a charming view of the waters of the Baltic Sea and breakwaters. In the eastern part, we will find wide sandy beaches and spits covered with virgin forest and a strictly protected Natura 2000 area – the mouth of the Liwka Channel and the Ostoja on the Pomeranian Bay. From the mouth of the canal, heading further east, up to Mrzeżyno itself, about 15 kilometers, we can enjoy a trip through an extremely picturesque, almost fairy-tale seaside forest, through which numerous hiking and cycling trails will lead. Just before Mrzeżyno, it is necessary to visit the Nature Reserve “Nadmorski Bór Bażynowy” and its Magical “Krzywy Las”, a unique natural attraction on a global scale. On the other hand, from the south we will find ourselves on the Liwia Łuża Lake and the Nature Reserve around which there is an almost 10 km long walking and cycling trail.

History and monuments

The real heyday of Niechorze dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and the connection of the town with the Seaside Narrow-Gauge Railway. A train ride on the route Gryfice – Niechorze is one of the greatest attractions of the area. Restored wagons and railway stations from over 120 years ago are a unique journey through time along the historical monuments and natural attractions of this region.

The main monument and hallmark of Niechorze is the complex of buildings of the Lighthouse – one of the largest facilities of this type in Europe. The entire complex was built in the years 1863 – 1866 and consists of a lighthouse, lighthouse keepers’ houses, a garden and outbuildings. In Niechorze, within Lake Liwia Łuża and the first areas of village allocation, we will also find farmsteads and fishermen’s houses worth visiting, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

Attractions for children

Niechorze, as well as the whole area, is truly a “basin of attractions for children” and for entire families. Let’s start with the already mentioned journey on the Narrow-Gauge Railway. On its route, you can organize interesting stops and visit attractions in the Rewal commune, e.g. The Fisheries Museum in Niechorze, the Whale Park in Rewal (over 100 models of fish and marine mammals in 1:1 sizes), the Multimedia Museum on the Cliff in Trzęsacz (an interactive time tour through the greatest mysteries of the Baltic Sea), the Commuter Railway Exhibition and the Exhibition of Railway Miniatures. There are also as many as 4 rope parks for children and teenagers in the area – Park GIBON in Rewal and Pobierowo, Park Revolta in Pogorzelica and Rope Park Pobierowo.

In the vicinity of the Lighthouse in Niechorze, you must visit the Lighthouse Miniature Park and the Butterfly House with thousands of butterflies from the most exotic corners of the world. There are also plenty of dining options, including cafes and ice cream shops.
